Signotaur 2.1 adds document signing for PDF, XML and other files using PAdES, XAdES and CAdES, alongside new Internal CA and certificate-management features. This post focuses on document signing, including signature levels, certificates and trust, with a brief look at the other changes in 2.1.

Signotaur 2.0 adds managed certificate issuance and renewal through its built-in Certificate Authority or Microsoft AD CS, along with encrypted portable backups, stronger protection for stored secrets, per-API-key rate limiting and streamlined server administration.

Some file - zips, ISOs, disk images, arbitrary binaries - have nowhere to put an embedded signature. Signotaur now signs them with a detached CMS/PKCS#7 signature: the original is left byte-for-byte untouched and a standard .p7s lands alongside it, verifiable by Signotaur or any CMS tool like OpenSSL.
