Are you planning variable prompts when using manual stage promotion?
This would be great, so you would be able to make some decisions, only when the stage is executed (manually).

I just uploaded a test build which includes this feature, see this post :

Note that this build also has some other features (server side caching of view data, ability to set repo branches from triggers), it’s not a full release build yet as we are still testing it, however it is stable, it’s the version we are running on our inhouse build server. We hope to have an official update out next week.

ok, now i’ve installed the build but i’m not really sure how to define variables that should be prompted on some stages only?
or is it done automatically by inspecting which variables are used in the current/following stages?

We display all the configuration variables with prompt types in the stage promotion dialog for any stage where automatic promotion is switched off. We have not provided a way to select specific variables for each stage.
