FinalBuilder Crash when running backup script for VMware Server 2

Hi there,

I'm not sure if it's a bug or if I am being stupid. Forgive me if I am posting in the wrong forum.

I've got a computer running Windows Server 2008 R2 + VMware Server 2. It seems to be all good. I have 2 VM's running 2 different development environments and I've decided to install FinalBuilder to run backup scripts on this machine.

The scripts are simple and straight forward. It's basically stopping the VM's, copying the VM files into a folder, starting the VM's and copying the files from that folder into a external hard drive.

Firstly I've tried FinalBuilder 6 (build 6.3.0.1805). I've managed to install it and create the script but once I run the script, FinalBuilder just shut itself off and that's it. No log files and no error msgs.

Then, I've tried FinalBuilder 7 (build 7.0.0.515). Exactly the same thing described before happens.

Important note for this topic: if I put the VMware Server username and password, it just crashes. If I don't put anything about username and password, leave it blank and just localhost as a server, it starts, looks like it will do something and crashes...

To me, it look like I can get further on my plan without username and password which doesn't make any sense.

I hope someone will be able to give me some ideas once I've ran out of it already.

Hi Fred,

The VMWare actions shell out to the vmrun.exe command line utility, could you try using the vmrun utility directly and see if that works? Documentation on the vmrun commands can be found at: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vix162_vmrun_command.pdf

Regards,
Paul.

if I run the vmrun with the parameters to list the VM’s, it list the 2 vm’s that I have… tried to stop 1 of them and it worked sweet.

now, back to finalbuilder, i managed to get a error msg that says:Network Failure: Host Address lookup for server https://localhost:8333/ui failed: The requested name is valid, but no data of the requested type was found.

well, not that it is a progress but at least it’s giving me something to think about. heheh

Hi Fred,

Could you try using the IP address of the local machine instead of the hostname and seeing if that makes any difference?

Regards,
Paul.

Hi Paul,

I’ll try that tomorrow morning when I get back to work. Already left and I didn’t do anything new…

I will come back here to keep you updated.

Thanks heaps for your help mate.

Hi Paul…

No good news… using the IP is returning the same error msg… It’s disturbing me hard out.

Have you heard of any incompatibility of FB and Win Server? or FB and VM Server?

I’ve got the same structure running on Win XP + VMware WorkStation + FB6 = sweet automated backup.

Cheers,
Fred Kaiser

Hi Fred,

> Have you heard of any incompatibility of FB and Win Server? or FB and VM Server?

Not that we’re aware of and we have used the VMWare actions (on WinXP) to automate the backup of our VMWare Server 2 server which was very reliable. Which version of ViX have you got installed on the machine?

Also, just noticed that the address the error has returned is https://localhost:8333/ui but should be https://localhost:8333/sdk.

Regards,
Paul.
