Best way to get program output into variable?

Whats the best way to read program output (e.g. DOS command) into a variable?

Also it would be great to have AssemblyInfo Reader action to get those values accessible.

My current task is simply setting the version of the current build based on the version of the AssemblyVersion entry in a specific AssemblyInfo file.
