Plans for deployment

The website talks about deployment but there is not much information about your plans for this.  Do you have any more details about this area?

This clearly a case where marketing is ahead of development. At the moment, the deployment story is to use msdeploy or FinalBuilder. We do have plans for a dedicated deployment module but that is still some way off.

Lol - thought that’s what it looked like. In the meantime, how about support for the rather fantastic Octopus (www.octopusdeploy.com). An Australian product too…

It’s unlikely we will add explicit support for Octopus since it pretty much does what our deployment module will do (continua is a modular system under the hood, it’s just hidden at the moment as there is only one module installed). I will take a look at it but can’t make any promises.

Okay, thanks for the update.  It's not a major issue as I can call it through PowerShell in any case.

When you talk about a deployment module, will this be a module functional enough that it can replace Final Builder? Right now we’re using an FB project to perform actual deployment steps (backups, file copies, service control, rollback on failure, etc) but it’s called from Continua.

We’re no where near ready to discuss the specific features, and it will be some time before the module is ready. If you have ideas or features you would like to see we are taking requests.

Hi
Is there any update on this? we use Continua on a number of projects very successfully where we just have one or two servers. However we have a new project starting where we will potentially have 30+ client servers in live. Ideally I want to build once and orchestrate as I do currently through the test environment. The difference is when were ready to deploy to live I would like to use an automation product / module to manage this. So I can see which client servers have which releases of code / failed to deploy etc.

Many years ago when I worked for a corporate with hundreds of servers we used CA Unicenter and this was great (but expensive) to manage hundreds of releases. I see earlier in this thread you mention a deployment module and was wondering if this is available and able to manage 30+ clients with a build once deploy multiple methodology

Many thanks for any advice

Rob

Hi Rob

Despite what I said above, we will have Octopus Deploy support in an upcoming (a few weeks) update. I decided on this course of action because our own deployment module is still some way off, so it’s better to have some delployment options than none.

I will blog about this support when we get close to release of the update (tenatively named 1.5, whilst it has new features it’s not quite a new major version).

Hi Vincent
Thanks for the prompt update. I will look out for this with anticipation  Is there likely to be a beta release we can play with whilst setting up our build infrastructure?

Rob

We will probably have a short beta period just to confirm the upgrade process works correctly. We’ll post on the forums when we’re ready to beta.
