I’ve just downloaded a trial of FB4 and I’m stuck on task #1. Get Latest from SourceSafe. I receive an error “Unable to open Source Safe Database. User ‘hansenm’ not found.” when I try to select a Project. I’ve configured everything except Project in Tools|Options - that’s the only one with the problem.
I can log into VSS through the reglular client and/or Visual Studio just fine. What am I missing??

Never mind. Sorry. I had to “Override Global Settings” and enter a different srcsafe.ini path. The default must be the local srcsafe.ini? Not the current SS database - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Sourcesafe\Current Database?
The global default is set under Tools -> Options -> Version Control Systems -> SourceSafe.
I think at the moment it defaults to be blank. I’ll look into replacing this default with the ini from the registry value you mention. Thanks for pointing that out.

Sorry, just read your post again. You said that you had set an ini file under Tools -> Options? Was it the same one?
If the INI file field was blank (either in Options, or in the action if Override was set) then you should have received a validation error, “SourceSafe Ini file has not been set”.
The INI file had a default value and that value was the path to my local INI file. Yes, it would be nice if that default value was initialized to the registry setting I posted.
I was able to get it to work by selecting “Override Defaults” in each task. But, you are right, the correct solution is to modify the INI path in the Locations section under Tools|Options|Version Control Systems.

The latest test build has the feature to load the option (if blank) from the registry. You can get it from:

Under Tools -> Options , you might have specified the Source Safe INI File from VSS client. Instead you should specify the srcsafe.ini file from VSS Server Path
