# XML Merge back to the same file

Right now if you try and set the Destination file as the same as Source 1 in the XML&nbsp;Merge action, the action fails with a slightly confusing message.&nbsp; My guess is that the file isn't opened in such a way that the output doesn't interfere with the input.&nbsp; This would avoid having to create intermediate steps that create temporary files.
