# SFTP Error - Connection failed (error code is 11001)

I'm getting a "Connection failed (error code is 11001)" error when I try and connect to a sftp site.
My normal ftp client connects on sftp no problem so I don't think there is a problem on the server.
Any ideas on how to diagnose this problem?

Hi Tony
Error 11001 is a winsock error, usually host not found… could also be a dns issue. Are you sure you typed the host name in correctly. What sftp server are you using?

It is a name resolution problem, if I use the IP address rather than the host name it works fine.
The IP address is in the hosts file so you seem to have a bug with name resolution and the hosts file.

Hi Tony
I’m not able to reproduce this. I added my home pc ip address to my work pc hosts file (I have a vpn between home and work). Our network dns doesn’t resolve addresses over the vpn. I ran a sftp server (zFTPServer) on my home pc and I’m able to connect just fine using the host name I put in my hosts file.
Which operating systems are you working with and which sftp servers.

I’ve just done some more testing, I think its a problem with my networking.
