# Key Length for Blowfish algorithm?

I found in the docs that Blowfish is the algorithm used for encryption of passwords within Automise. What is the length of the key? Looks like the range can be from 32 to 448 bits. We are being asked by our compliance folks.

Hi Jonathan

The default key length is 112 bits. We do not recommend relying on any encryption in Automise - it’s there to obfuscate passwords from a casual glance at the project files in notepad.

When we chose blowfish originally - it was a decision based around avoiding the hassle of US export controls for encryption - and of course now we need to keep it for backwards compatibility.
