# How to run .dll extension program

What is the methods to run 3rd application program which has .dll extension instead of .exe?

You cannot “run” a dll, it’s a library not an executable.

I want to automate this program, i need to run it first right. But this program didn’t have exe extension. and when search on the registry, it seems that, to run this program, it calls its dll. so im assume that this program is running by calling this dll.
Any advice?

You need to use the rundll32.exe program. Here’s a good document that talks about using it.

Hi... to execute a .dll files

STEPS:
- I created a Virtual directory that points to the folder where the dll is.
- On the localhost I added the dll with an allowed restriction under ISAPI Restrictions and enabled the "Allow extension path to Execute" checkbox. I get the same 404.3 error with this on or not so I guess it is not getting to this restriction
- I also made sure the folder has the correct permissions for the ISUR acct
- I can open a txt file I put in the same folder but not the dll I get an error 404.3 message.
